Helmstedt & Surroundings
Helmstedt lies in the middle of a history-rich region. Only a few kilometres away, the Schöningen Research Museum shows the world-famous Schöningen Spears — the oldest preserved hunting weapons of humankind. In Königslutter am Elm the Romanesque Imperial Cathedral impresses, and the Elm ridge invites you into nature. A day for everyone who wants to look beyond Helmstedt.
Best time to visit: April to October — ideal for the Elm and excursions into the surrounding area
Day 1
Spears, Imperial Cathedral and the Elm
We start at the Schöningen Research Museum with the spears, continue to the Imperial Cathedral of Königslutter and finish at the Elm ridge.
- 9:30 - 12:00
Schöningen Spears in the research museum
The Schöningen Research Museum (paläon) shows the Schöningen Spears — around 300,000-year-old throwing spears and the oldest fully preserved hunting weapons of humankind. An archaeological sensation, presented in a modern and vivid way.
Tip: Allow at least two hours for the permanent exhibition — it is very interactive.
- 12:30 - 13:30
Lunch in Königslutter am Elm
On the way to the Imperial Cathedral, a break in Königslutter am Elm — cosy eateries and cafes in the historic town centre offer regional cuisine for lunchtime.
- 13:45 - 15:30
Imperial Cathedral Königslutter
The Imperial Cathedral of Königslutter is one of the most important Romanesque churches in northern Germany, founded by Emperor Lothar III. Rich architectural ornament, the famous hunting-frieze portal and the cloister make the cathedral the architectural highlight of the region.
- 15:45 - 17:30
A walk on the Elm ridge
The Elm is the highest ridge in the region — a beech forest area with hiking trails, viewpoints and quiet clearings. A relaxed natural conclusion after the cultural programme.
- 18:30 - 20:30
Dinner back in Helmstedt
Back in the university town, a cosy spot in the old town — regional cuisine in a half-timbered setting as the end of the regional day.
