Lake Lappwaldsee
Lake Lappwaldsee is taking shape in the former Helmstedt lignite open-cast mine and is growing year by year into one of the largest lakes in the region. Even today, the wide waterside landscape is a popular destination for walks and bike rides with views of the ongoing renaturation. In the long term, the Lappwaldsee is to become an attractive recreation area with bathing spots, water sports and shoreline trails. It is an impressive example of how new nature can emerge from an industrial landscape.
