Half-Timbered Old Town

Helmstedt's old town preserves a dense ensemble of half-timbered houses, some dating back to the 16th century. In the narrow lanes around the market, Holzberg and Papenberg, the history of the former university city comes alive: this is where professors, students and wealthy merchants once lived. Richly carved sill beams, oriel turrets and old inscriptions bear witness to the civic pride of past centuries.
