Helmstedt in One Day
If you only have one day, start at the Juleum — the magnificent Renaissance hall of the former Academia Julia university and Helmstedt's landmark. From there the route leads through the half-timbered old town with its market square and town hall, on to St Ludgeri Abbey with its ancient double chapel. A cosy lunch break is built in, and in the afternoon a look at German-German history at the Zonal Border Museum.
Best time to visit: April to October — the old town and the Lappwald forest are at their best then
Day 1
The highlights in one day
We start at the Juleum, stroll across the market square through the half-timbered old town, have lunch in the city and finish with border history at the Zonal Border Museum.
- 9:30 - 11:00
Juleum — the landmark
The Juleum of 1592 is Helmstedt's landmark: a magnificent Renaissance hall with a distinctive bailiff's tower, once the heart of the Academia Julia university (1576-1810). Today it houses the district museum and library. Inside, the great hall with its rich woodcarving is well worth seeing.
Tip: Come early — the morning hours are quietest in the museum.
- 11:00 - 12:30
Market square and half-timbered old town
Just a few steps from the Juleum to the market square with its town hall and the finest half-timbered houses in town. Narrow lanes, carved beams and the bailiff's tower define the historic centre of the university town.
- 12:30 - 13:45
Lunch in the old town
Around the market square and in the half-timbered lanes there are cosy places serving regional cuisine — from hearty Lower Saxon home cooking to coffee and cake in a historic setting.
- 14:00 - 15:30
St Ludgeri Abbey
With its double chapel and crypt, St Ludgeri Abbey is one of the oldest sacred buildings in northern Germany. The Romanesque double chapel (two superimposed prayer rooms) is an architectural gem and a must-see on any Helmstedt tour.
- 15:45 - 17:30
Zonal Border Museum Helmstedt
To finish, a look at the German-German division: the Zonal Border Museum tells of life along the inner-German border and at Marienborn, the largest GDR border crossing. Original exhibits, vehicles and documents make history tangible.
Tip: With more time, drive on to the Marienborn Memorial — the actual Checkpoint Alpha.
- 18:30 - 20:30
Dinner in the old town
To wind down, a cosy spot in the historic centre — half-timbered atmosphere, regional cuisine and a local beer round off the day in the university town.
