Experience Border History — Marienborn

For decades Helmstedt was the gateway between East and West. Right outside the city lay Marienborn, the largest GDR border crossing — the legendary Checkpoint Alpha. This guide leads to the impressive German Division Memorial Marienborn, into the Zonal Border Museum Helmstedt and along the former border line through the Lappwald. A moving day about division, the fall of the Wall and remembrance.

Best time to visit: All year round — the memorial is largely covered and open all year

Experience Border History — Marienborn

Day 1

From Checkpoint Alpha to remembrance

We start at the Marienborn Memorial, deepen the history at the Zonal Border Museum and finish with a walk along the former border line in the Lappwald.

  1. 9:30 - 12:00

    German Division Memorial Marienborn

The Marienborn Memorial is the largest preserved border crossing point of the GDR — the main crossing of the transit route to West Berlin, formerly known as 'Checkpoint Alpha'. Control barracks, command posts and barriers survive in their original state, making the GDR border regime vividly tangible.

Tip: The site is extensive — allow at least two hours to walk around the grounds.

  2. 12:15 - 13:30

    Lunch in Helmstedt's old town

Back in town, a break in one of the spots around the market square — regional cuisine in a half-timbered setting before continuing into the border history.

  3. 13:45 - 15:30

    Zonal Border Museum Helmstedt

The Zonal Border Museum deepens the history from Helmstedt's perspective: life on and with the border, escape stories, border installations and everyday life in the borderland. Personal documents and original exhibits complement the visit to Marienborn.

  4. 15:45 - 17:30

The border line through the Lappwald

A walk through the Lappwald follows the former border line. In many places a green belt has emerged today — nature that has reclaimed the former border installations. Quiet paths that invite reflection.

  5. 18:30 - 20:30

    Dinner in the old town

To wind down, a cosy spot in Helmstedt's historic centre — time to let the impressions of the day settle over regional cuisine and a glass of wine.
