Academia Julia (University History)
The Academia Julia, founded in 1576 by Duke Julius and named after him, made Helmstedt an important university city for more than two centuries. Until its closure in 1810, famous scholars taught and researched here, and thousands of students shaped the life of the town. Numerous buildings, inscriptions and memorial sites — above all the Juleum — keep this academic heritage alive. A themed walk through the old town tells the story of the former university and its people.
