Königslutter Imperial Cathedral

The Imperial Cathedral in Königslutter at the Elm was founded from 1135 by Emperor Lothar III as his burial place and is one of the outstanding works of Romanesque architecture in Germany. It is famous for its rich sculptural decoration, above all the encircling hunting frieze and the artful columns of the cloister. The mighty basilica with its three towers lies at the foot of the wooded Elm ridge and is a popular excursion destination in the region around Helmstedt. A visit combines impressive architecture with the nature of the Elm.
